A Beacon in the Night

Written by: Michael Smart

Harm reduction has been a lifeline for me since I am considered homeless and have nowhere else to turn on these cold subarctic winter nights. Had it not been for the warming shelter during the night and harm reduction during the day I would've either froze to death or starved to death, either option not one to take lightly. I am also an addict and have been struggling with this title for several years now. Each time I get clean and hope for the best, harm reduction has been there to offer me services that are much needed and much appreciated. Thankfully I now have a job to help with my everyday living expenses and to help me come out on top of my self-inflicted disease but it hasn't always been so. During those bleak times of no food, no shelter and no way to support myself I have turned to harm reduction to help provide me with basic services like issuing me a transit bus pass so I can travel to my appointments or scheduled events. Harm reduction has also provided me with transportation to clinical appointments or to detox and treatment when I was at my lowest and had nothing else to lose but to take that leap of faith and try to get better, all with harm reductions help and support. I'm still struggling with addiction but it is an easier road to travel if I have harm reduction as my copilot.
