Zach Hartlev
Naloxone Inventory Specialist
Zach was born in Columbus, OH. His mother moved them to Bad River in 1990 to live with his grandmother, the late Adelle (Bender) Hartlev. Quick shout out to 3rd Rd on the Hill! Early in life, the importance of his indigenous roots was strongly impressed upon him. Zach took to learning powwow songs, dances, Ojibwe language and ceremonies. Experiencing these practices greatly increased his sense of identity and his capacity for resiliency. Which came into play upon his being offered substances i.e. drugs and alcohol during his teen years. Ultimately, Zach’s resilience helped refrain from walking completely down a path to addiction. Despite experimentations with illicit substances leading to troubles with the law and eventual incarceration in 2007, he chose to walk toward a path latent with traditional indigenous practices. After 20 years of working toward the betterment of himself and the youth of Bad River through sharing traditional practices, he decided to lend his skills and talents toward bettering his community through Harm Reduction. Zach’s goal, when he started in youth work, was to “be the person that you needed when you were growing up.” Today he says, “That goal hasn’t changed, we’re just a little older now.”
